Ripon U13's stepped up to the challenge of their first ever competitive rugby match, securing a wonderful away win at Roundhegians.
Confusion over the start time left Ripon (players and spectators) with a full two hours before kick off trying to control their nerves and excitement.
The start of the game, from Ripon's perspective, could have been stronger. Some hesitation and unforced handling errors gifted early opportunities to the home side and Ripon knew they had to quickly lift themselves to get back in the game. Roundhegians played some good rugby and outflanked Ripon initially but through better organisation and strong forward play, in particular at the scrum, Ripon secured ball against the head on several occasions.
Once in possession and with improving handling, the Ripon backs were able to capitalise and run in some great tries. Once ahead, Ripon never looked back and sealed the game convincingly.
Overall this was an understandably nervous start to Ripon's Cup campaign as the competitive setting brings a whole new experience for the players and supporters. It is clear that, as the team settle in and enjoy the experience of Cup games, their rugby will only develop further and become stronger.
Well done to all and a great team effort!
