After a disappointing first weeks display, Ripon U13s season was given a kick start with a strong team performance down in the Calder Valley against Heath RFC. Playing some expansive rugby through the backs, Ripon scored two early tries through Harry Hart and Archie Turner, only to be pegged back by a spirited Heath team who were to prove difficult opponents.
The two teams were quite evenly matched throughout the first half with both sides having strong phases with the ball. It wasn't till the second half that the team really hit their stride with some powerful rucking as the Ripon forwards fitness gave them the upper hand. Time and again the ball was moved swiftly down the back line with the team starting to fully appreciate the wide open spaces across the larger pitch.
Sticking to the coaches requests to secure quick ball and play an unselfish passing game, they finally ran in a total of 8 tries and were worthy winners. Our other scorers were Cam Lang-burns, Jacob Butterill, Charlie Borchard, Will Wood, Charlie Lock and a second from Archie Turner. The game is made to look so easy when it's played so simply; all credit to the team for listening and learning. The lads know they will have to progress their game again with the visit of Yarnbury next weekend.
