Match report by Kelvin Heaton

Ripon U15’s got the season off with a win in a close game at home against Richmond & Barnard Castle. The game started at a quick pace with Ripon pressing from the whistle. Jack Baldwin going close in the opening minutes. Richmond got the first points on the board when from a scrum they broke down the wing to score in the corner.

Ripon continued to press however and were soon on level terms when James Willis finished off a good run to score the equaliser. The home team then enjoyed a good spell of possession and were unlucky not to score when first Lucien Wray was brought down by the last defender and then Rob Heaton got over to score only for the game to be pulled back for a knock-on in the ruck. Eventually the pressure told and after Ben Borchard robbed the ball from the fullback after a good kick into the backfield, he fed winger Jamie McGooan who ran in to score in his first game.

Again Richmond levelled the score but Ripon again had chances and Elliot Bean was unlucky after a great run down the wing. Ripon’s winning try was the best of the day, Ric Castle-Ward bursting through from the halfway line evading tackles and handing off players to score a beauty. Charlie Hynes put the conversion over and when Richmond scored a late try but could not convert it the result went to Ripon 17-15.

A good all round performance, few tackles missed, plenty to work on in training but a good start.
