A subtle blend of youth and experience took to the field this week with the key purpose of Ripon exploring options for the future as well as giving the opportunity for older players to exert a steadying influence on the game. The debate as to whether to play a side from a Division above Ripon or not, is over; the result however, keeps on talking. Perhaps the four second half tries flattered Yarnbury somewhat, but the gulf between the two sides’ fitness and all round team play, showed in the end. The point that must be made however, despite the result, was that in only being able to field one team from three this weekend, Ripon definitely showed resolve from those who stepped in and stepped up at the last minute to make a game of it. Apologies of course go again to Yarnbury for the calling off of the second and third team games, the former at midday on the Saturday. A strange balance of commitment on show here from the membership. A club with some 80 odd playing members is barely capable of fielding three teams on a regular basis, but when they do take to the pitch, they fight like lions.
In a game whose result closely resembled the England Italy score (is this a losing or a winning match report?), Ripon started the game with a pace and intensity that made the opposition take notice from the kick off and saw a very evenly matched first half. Tries from Leeming and Buckley, with a conversion from welcome returnee Glenn Lyons, saw Ripon match the visitors score for score and turn around at half time 12 – 12.
The second half was however, more of a one way street, with Yarnbury cutting some fine lines in their backs and slicing through to score a further four tries all of which were converted. Consolation points came for Ripon from a try by Dud Stead, converted by Lyons.
There were many positives to the game that Ripon can take comfort from. 1st XV debuts from Charlie Capps (Yorkshire Under 18) out of position at Lock, James Tyreman at Loose Head Prop and recalls for veteran half back Richard Hooks, Elliot Oates and Glenn Lyons, proved this week that they are very much in contention for places in the side. The set piece held firm and competition in open play was well executed. Defensively Ripon need to sharpen up on their communications and finishing, but using possession wisely will bring scores as this game showed and the elimination of mistakes, will secure wins.
Another all-round good effort from Ripon, who need to keep up the good work to survive in Yorkshire Two. Next week sees a return to league action with Ripon travelling to Knottingley, which promises to be a hard fought encounter for both. Kick off will be 2.15 all support, as ever, more than welcome.
