Ripon U13s played their first full match since January 19th due to the recent weather conditions and the long break was evident in todays performance.
That being said there were a couple of outstanding performances and some periods of great rugby.
York used the very strong wind to their advantage much better than Ripon with some huge pressure relieving kicks when they had the wind behind them.
The first ten minutes were very closely contested with York seeing the majority of possession and Ripon defending excellently. Huge tackles coming from the back row players Max Bridge, Evan Rees and Ted Wainwright and the centre partnership of Soloman Fiengold and Michael Sorby.
York however were first to score in the corner with Bob McKee tackling the winger into the corner flag as he scored. A cup or league match may have seen the try contested but it was a well deserved score for the visitors.
Ripon soon hit back though. Hamish Mainey took a quick tap penalty just outside the York 22 and fed to Evan Rees, who did enough to draw the defence and pass it out to speedster Connor Stout who beat the cover to go over in the corner.
With eight substitutes to bring on, the shape of the team changed a few times making it hard to settle and a couple of missed tackles allowed York to punish the mistakes.
Oliver Williams played very well, controlling the back line from 10 and had a few elusive runs through the defence. Michael Sorby was solid in defence and had a few powerful runs himself.
Connor Stout had a great game and looked dangerous every time he had his hands on the ball.
In summary, a rusty performance, beaten by a better team on the day but a lot of positives to build on.
